How to Withdraw a Resignation
Every other ask on this site is made by somebody who is staying either way, and the worst case is that nothing changes. Being counteroffered is this one’s exact opposite — there your employer moves first and you are holding an offer. This ask is made after you have already spent everything you had, and three things follow. You are not asking anybody to reverse a decision; you are asking them to undo work they have already done— a posted role, a released budget line, a started handover, a team that was told, sometimes an offer already made to somebody else. That, not whether anyone wants you there, is usually what decides it, which is why this asks what has already been committed beforeit asks for anything. The resignation can’t be unsaid even if the withdrawal is accepted — a yes still leaves you as somebody who was leaving, so you get the terms of the return and not just the return. And in most places this isn’t yours to take back: acceptance is your employer’s to give. You get the four things to find out first and who to ask, the one line that answers what everybody in the room is silently thinking, the message drafted, the five things an acceptance has to contain, and the four replies for when the answer is no or not yet.
Generated for: Regional Operations Lead at a 200-person logistics firm, six years in, resigned by email nine days ago at the end of a fortnight of covering two depots — the new employer has since pushed the start date twice with no new one, the role here has not been advertised, and the depot manager they clashed with has moved sites
What has already moved — This is decided by what has already been committed far more often than by whether anybody wants you there, and nine days in there is usually less committed than you fear. Find out four things before you ask for anything. Whether the resignation has been formally accepted and in what form — ask [your manager or HR]. Whether the role has been advertised or anybody has been offered it — ask [your manager]. What has already been handed over or reassigned, and to whom — ask [your manager]. And who has been told, inside and outside — ask [your manager]. This page cannot tell you whether you have any right to withdraw a resignation, what your notice period or contract says, or what has to happen where you work; those are for somebody qualified and for whoever holds them.
