How to Ask to Leave Before Your Notice Period Ends
Every other ask here — a raise, a title, remote working, a transfer, training — is made to somebody who will still have you afterwards, and who therefore gets something back for a yes. Asking to return to a company you left, and asking to withdraw a resignation, both hand that employer an employee. This is the only one where a yes leaves the other side strictly worse offand buys them nothing back — and where the scarcity you’re complaining about is one you created by resigning. Three things follow. This ask can be over-granted, and an over-grant is a loss: asking to go two weeks early says your remaining time is negotiable, and the reply can name a date you never proposed and can’t afford. So nothing goes out without one specific date in it, nothing goes out before you’ve settled the earliest date you could genuinely live with, and nothing here rules on whether you’ll be walked out — or reassures you that you won’t. The remaining notice isn’t worthless just because you’ve stopped wanting to serve it, so this won’t coach the checked-out argument — an argument against the person making it, delivered to the people who decide what your last months are said to have been — and it won’t rule that every day must be served either. And the handover is the only thing still in your hands and it is not a lever: nothing conditions it, paces it or holds anything back, and nothing leaves it unnamed either. You get what to settle first, who to go to, what you’re actually asking for, the message at no more than 115 words, the five things to leave out, the three replies that come back — including being offered a date soonerthan the one you asked for — and the four questions this page won’t answer, each with the person, function or document that holds it.
Generated for: Operations Manager, resigned on the 1st, last day is the 28th, notes written up and signed off but two client accounts still with me, manager said “we’ll see” in a corridor and nothing in writing, the new job would like me on the 15th
Settle this before you send anything — A question about the leaving date can be answered with a date, and the date they choose can be sooner than anything you had in mind. So the earliest day you could actually afford to be gone has to exist before anybody is asked, and every step here costs nothing and commits you to nothing. Write down that earliest acceptable date and treat it as a floor you do not go below. Write down what is finished, what is left and who holds each piece. Find out who actually owns the leaving date, which is often not whoever accepted the resignation. Establish what is on the books and who books it. And decide now what you will do with each possible answer.
The real one is written against your own leaving date, your own handover and what has already been said to whom — and it never invents a date, a notice length or a number of days of leave, never prices or conditions the handover, and never rules on whether notice can be shortened, what happens to untaken holiday, or whether the days you don’t work are paid.
